Staff Senate Executive Committee
Officers
The President of the Staff Senate presides over senate meetings and acts as the official representative of the Senate. The President serves a one year term. The person elected to the President-Elect position serves one year in that position, one year as President, and one year as Past President.
The Secretary keeps minutes of all meetings of the Senate and shall carry on all official correspondence as directed. The Secretary is also responsible for monitoring attendance and will work with the Office of University Governance to retain agendas, minutes, correspondence, and other records. The Secretary serves a one year term. The person elected to the Secretary-Elect position serves one year in that position and one year as Secretary.
The Treasurer reports on the state of the Senate budget and encourages consideration of budgetary options and restrictions. The Treasurer requests payments by the Office of University Governance and submits an annual budget report. The Treasurer serves a one year term. The person elected to the Treasurer-Elect position serves one year in that position and one year as Treasurer.
The Technology Officer facilitates the work of the Senate by providing support for technical work of the Senate and its committees. This position, and its successors, is filled by appointment by the President and confirmation by majority vote of the Senate. The Technology Officer may serve in this position contingent on continued service as a senator.
Committee Chairs
Chairs and Chairs-Elect must be currently elected senators. Open positions, including Chairs-Elect positions, for the standing committees shall be nominated and elected by the incoming Senate at the transition meeting in April, with the exception of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Officers are not eligible to be elected as a Chair or Chair-Elect of standing committees.
Nominees for the Diversity and Inclusion Committee Chair and Chair-Elect will be asked to submit a statement defining diversity, equity, and inclusion and their vision of its impact on the University of Kansas. Qualified nominees will be presented by the President, in consultation with a representative from the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) and the current Chair, for election by the full Senate.
Chairs for the standing committees preside over committee meetings and deliver status reports to the Executive Committee and the full Senate. Chairs and Chairs-Elect will coordinate responsibilities for all other administrative functions of the committee and will present annual reports.
Other Representatives
The role of the University Support Staff (USS) and Unclassified Professional Staff (UPS) Councils is to advise the Board of Regents regarding matters relating to USS and UPS issues and concerns, respectively. The President shall, in consultation with those Senators drawn from the relevant classification and confirmation by a majority vote of the Senate, appoint members to these councils.
The President, President-Elect and one staff member elected from the University Senate Representatives shall attend SenEx meetings as the official representatives of the electorate. The President serves as ex-officio non-voting member. In the event of an absence by one of the Senate voting representatives to the University Senate Executive Committee, the President may vote as a representative of the Senate.
