Celebrate International Education Week 2024 at KU!

International Education Week (IEW) is an annual event jointly sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State that highlights the benefits of international education and exchanges worldwide. During IEW, universities, embassies, and other organizations with an international mission promote international education opportunities that prepare Americans for a global world and attract future leaders from abroad to study in the United States. This year, IEW will be celebrated during the week of Nov. 18-22. Governor Laura Kelly has also issued a proclamation designating the week as International Education Week for the State of Kansas.

There are lots of ways for staff members to get involved, learn more about international education at KU, and recognize the international education success stories of our colleagues and students:

  • Share your own international education story! International Affairs is gathering submissions from the KU community about how an international experience influenced the educational journeys of staff, faculty, and students. Submit your story, or read the submissions from this year and past IEWs.
  • Dust off your foreign language skills and stop by one of the many language tables happening during IEW. Native speakers and learners alike will gather to practice Polish, Bosnian-Croatian-Montenegrin-Serbian, Turkish, Persian, Arabic, Ukrainian, KiSwahili, Italian, French, and German. More information about meeting times and locations for each language table is available on the KU Events Calendar.
  • Learn more about a major geopolitical event through the lens of poetry at Poetry in a Time of War: An Evening with Ukrainian Poet Halyna Kruk.
  • Explore new places through the East Asian Literature Book Club. The Nov. 20 meeting will discuss The Backstreets: A Novel from Xinjiang by Perhat Tursun.
  • Close out the week by joining International Affairs for a talk by Melinda Lewis from the School of Social Welfare on the critical importance of a global perspective in social work practice. Professor Lewis is the International Affairs Advisory Board International Teaching Award recipient for 2024. The event will be held both in person and via Zoom
